Smith Bears Fall to No. 11 MIT, 7-0, in NEWMAC Action

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — The Smith College women's tennis team was swept by No. 11 Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 7-0, in NEWMAC competition Saturday at MIT. The Engineers claimed the doubles point with a clean sweep before winning all six singles contests in straight sets, dropping the Bears to 6-8 overall and 3-3 in conference play.

Doubles

MIT set the tone early, sweeping all three doubles courts to seize the point without dropping a set. Ayla Hauser (Knoxville, TN/Bearden) and Natazya Simunyola (Lorton, VA/South County High School) offered Smith's most competitive doubles showing at No. 2, falling 6-3 to MIT's Carley Chen and Chloe Zeng. Ava Emrich (Smyrna, Delaware/Tower Hill School) and Heidi Cambron (Sherbrooke, Canada/Champlain College Lennoxville) dropped a 6-0 decision at No. 1 to Alaina Kolli and Artemis Pados, while Emily Wang (Westford, MA/Westford Academy) and Olivia Chin (Bayside, NY/Dominican Academy) fell by the same margin at No. 3 against Katie Driscoll and Anastasia Samets.

Singles

The Engineers carried their momentum through all six singles positions, winning each in straight sets. Emrich gave the Bears their most competitive showing of the afternoon at No. 2, pushing Zeng to 4-6 in the second set before falling 6-2, 6-4. Hauser dropped a 6-2, 6-1 decision at No. 1 to Saina Deshpande, while Cambron fell 6-2, 6-3 at No. 3 to Katie Driscoll. Simunyola made it competitive in the opening set at No. 4 before losing 6-4, 6-2 to Sophia Yang. Olivia Chin (Bayside, NY/Dominican Academy) fell 6-2, 6-2 at No. 5 to Carley Chen, and Wang closed out the day at No. 6 with a more resilient second set before dropping a 6-0, 6-4 result against Rayna Li.
