Williams Blanks Smith College, 2-0, in Non-Conference Road Matchup

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — The Smith College softball team (15-14) was held scoreless on Wednesday afternoon, falling 2-0 to Williams College at Cole Field in a non-conference matchup. Starter Bailey Gray (Missouri City, TX/Ridge Point) turned in a quality effort in the circle, but a two-run fourth inning proved to be the difference as the Bears stranded six runners on the bases.

Smith threatened immediately in the top of the first, as Gabbie Chinnis (Charleston, SC/Charleston County School of Arts) drew a leadoff walk and Violet Peverly (Granby, CT/Loomis Chaffee) added a one-out free pass to put runners on the corners. A well-placed 3-1 double play ended the rally before the Bears could break through.

Williams plated both of its runs in the bottom of the fourth. Miya Fujimoto reached on a leadoff walk, moved into scoring position on a passed ball, and came around to score when Sidney Miller's single and a pair of miscues put the Ephs on the board. A Katie Blanch sacrifice fly brought home Miller two batters later to make it 2-0.

In the Circle
Gray went 6.0 innings in a complete outing for Smith, allowing four hits and two runs on three walks with four strikeouts. She worked efficiently, throwing 51 of her 82 pitches for strikes and retiring Williams in order in the first, third, and fifth innings.

Offensive Notes
Sophie Hasegawa (Palos Verdes Estates, CA/Palos Verdes) led the Smith offense with a pair of hits, including a two-out double down the right-field line in the fifth. Ally Knutson (Green Bay, WI/Bay Port), Lily Hackett (Concord, NH/Concord), and Elinor Washington (Sacramento, CA/Pleasant Grove) also added base hits. The Bears drew four walks on the afternoon but grounded into a pair of double plays that halted rallies in the first and fifth innings.
