Rowing Claims Florence Jope Smith Cup; Places Second Overall at NEWMAC Championship

WORCESTER --The Smith College rowing team placed second at the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Rowing Championship Saturday morning on Lake Quinsigamond. Wellesley College won the varsity eight race and placed second in the second varsity eight to secure the conference's automatic bid to the 2026 NCAA Division III Rowing Championship.

Smith, which won the other three races on the day, captured the Florence Jope Smith Cup, awarded annually to the program with the highest point total from the overall championship results, with 38 points. Wellesley was second with 34 points, followed by Coast Guard (24), WPI (18), Mount Holyoke (10), Clark (8) and Simmons (2).
Wellesley won the varsity eight in 6:53.09, with Smith second in 6:55.29 and Coast Guard third in 7:09.09. WPI placed fourth in 7:10.29, followed by Clark (7:20.99), Mount Holyoke (7:22.09) and Simmons (8:22.59).

Smith claimed the second varsity eight in 7:12.50 ahead of Wellesley (7:18.83), Coast Guard (7:30.38), WPI (7:32.46), Mount Holyoke (7:56.55) and Clark (8:12.47).
The third varsity eight was won by Smith in 7:19.90, narrowly ahead of Wellesley (7:21.47). Coast Guard placed third in 7:46.43, followed by WPI (8:09.95) and Mount Holyoke (8:36.22).
 
Racing concluded with the fourth varsity eight, where Smith posted a winning time of 7:42.56 while Wellesley was second in 8:04.72.
 
Smith's Nadia Grinyuk (Scarborough, ME/Scarborough) was named NEWMAC Rower of the Year and was joined on the All-Conference First Team by Julia Beyer (Ardmore, Pa./Friends' Central School) and Kathleen Bacigalupi (Saint Paul, MN/Highland Park). Coxswain Maddy Beer (Seattle, WA/Seattle Preparatory School) earned All-Conference Second Team honors.
