Box Score NORTHAMPTON, Mass. — The Smith College tennis team capped its NEWMAC regular season in style with a dominant 7-0 sweep of Emerson College on Senior Day Saturday afternoon at the Outdoor Tennis Courts. The Bears (8-8, 5-3 NEWMAC) honored their senior class before claiming the doubles point and rolling through the singles lineup in straight sets, extending their winning streak to two heading into postseason play.
Doubles Set the Tone
Smith took two of three at doubles to seize the early advantage. At No. 1, Emily Wang (Westford, MA/Westford Academy) and Olivia Chin (Bayside, NY/Dominican Academy) turned back Teah Login and Alisa Pimenova, 6-3. The No. 2 tandem of Dayana Caluna (Plainfield, NJ/College Achieve) and Marielle Sauber (The Woodlands, TX/The John Cooper School) with a 6-0 shutout of Kendi Bispham and Jayden Beverly. Emerson's lone team point came at No. 3 doubles, where Isabel Benitez Barron and Sophia Dube (Portland, OR/Oregon Episcopal School) fell 6-3 to Amaya Briones and Gianna Di-Reumante.
Straight-Set Sweep in Singles
The Bears carried the doubles momentum into singles and never relinquished it, dropping just nine games across 12 sets. Ava Emrich (Smyrna, Delaware/Tower Hill School) opened the flight with a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 1, and Heidi Cambron (Sherbrooke, Canada/Champlain College Lennoxville) delivered the most efficient performance of the afternoon at No. 2, allowing only one game in a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Briones. Sauber added a second win at No. 3 with a 6-1, 6-2 decision, while Wang followed at No. 4 with a 6-1, 6-1 result.
Bastress and Benitez Barron Close the Door
Tabitha Bastress (Shelburne, VT/Champlain Valley Union High School) stayed perfect on the day with a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 5, and Benitez Barron rebounded from her doubles loss to finish off the sweep at No. 6, 6-0, 6-3.
