NORTHAMPTON, Mass. — The Smith College tennis team opened NEWMAC Tournament play with a 4-0 victory over Springfield College on Tuesday afternoon at the outdoor tennis courts. The Bears took the doubles point and three straight singles matches to punch their ticket to the conference semifinal.
Doubles
Smith set the tone right out of the gate. Ayla Hauser (Knoxville, TN/Bearden) and Natazya Simunyola (Lorton, VA/South County High School) delivered the first point of the day at No. 2 doubles, dropping just one game in a 6-1 victory. Moments later, Ava Emrich (Smyrna, Delaware/Tower Hill School) and Heidi Cambron (Sherbrooke, Canada/Champlain College Lennoxville) clinched the doubles point with another 6-1 win, giving the Bears a 1-0 edge heading into singles.
Singles
Emrich kept the momentum rolling at the top of the lineup, racing past Springfield's Peyton Gaudreau 6-0, 6-1 at No. 1 singles to extend Smith's lead to 2-0. Marielle Sauber (The Woodlands, TX/The John Cooper School) followed with a flawless 6-0, 6-0 win at the No. 5 spot to push the score to 3-0. Simunyola then sealed the result with a dominant 6-2, 6-0 decision over Alyssa Elliott to clinch the match for the Bears.
