WALTHAM, Mass. — Smith College (9-8, 3-1) secured a decisive 11-2 victory over Emerson College (3-10, 1-2) in the first game of a doubleheader at Bentley Field on Friday, followed by a close 3-2 win in the second game against Emerson (3-11, 1-3). 

In the first game, Smith's offense was propelled by its ability to capitalize in the fourth and sixth innings, scoring four runs each while limiting Emerson to just two runs in the fourth inning. The game remained scoreless through the first two innings until Smith took the lead in the third. Elinor Washington (Sacramento, CA/Pleasant Grove) singled and stole second, followed by Lily Hackett's (Concord, NH/Concord) double to right center, bringing Washington home. Hackett later scored on a wild pitch, giving the Bears a 2-0 advantage. Score at the end of the third: Smith 2, Emerson 0.

Smith extended its lead in the fourth inning. After walks to Taz Tamai (Cincinati, OH/The Seven Hills School) and a pinch-runner situation with Anna Gray (Santa Barbara, CA/Dos Pueblos), Sophie Hasegawa (Palos Verdes Estates, CA/Palos Verdes) reached base on an error that allowed Tamai to score. Washington's double added two more runs, and Hackett's single, combined with an Emerson error, brought the score to 6-2. Score at the end of the fourth: Smith 6, Emerson 2.

The fifth inning saw the Bears adding another run with Bailey Gray's (Missouri City, TX/Ridge Point) RBI single, making it 7-2. Gray's performance was notable as she achieved a season-high total of 3 runs batted in during the game. Score at the end of the fifth: Smith 7, Emerson 2.

In the sixth inning, Smith widened the gap further. Hackett and Ally Knutson (Green Bay, WI/Bay Port) began the inning with singles, leading to a sacrifice fly by Violet Peverly (Granby, CT/Loomis Chaffee) that scored Hackett. Riley Veenstra's (Oakland, CA/Bishop O'Dowd) single brought in Knutson, and Gray's double drove in two more runs. Score at the end of the sixth: Smith 11, Emerson 2. 

Smith's pitching held Emerson scoreless in the final innings, maintaining an 11-2 lead to clinch the victory. Final score: Smith 11, Emerson 2. Violet Peverly (Granby, CT/Loomis Chaffee) delivered a complete game performance for the Bears, pitching 6 innings and allowing no earned runs against Emerson. She struck out eight batters, issued only two walks, and maintained a WHIP of 1.17 over 96 pitches, 65 of which were strikes. Peverly successfully limited Emerson to five hits while contributing one RBI offensively.

Bailey Gray (Missouri City, TX/Ridge Point) drove in three runs, including a double, contributing significantly to the team's scoring. Riley Veenstra (Oakland, CA/Bishop O'Dowd) added two hits, two runs, and one RBI, making an impact on both ends of the inning. Lily Hackett (Concord, NH/Concord) finished with three hits, including a double, and scored twice, achieving a season high and showcasing her efficiency at the plate.

In the second game, Smith edged Emerson with a final score of 3-2. The Bears secured the win with a decisive run in the seventh inning, backed by 11 hits across the game. In the first inning, Smith took an early lead. Ally Knutson (Green Bay, WI/Bay Port) singled through the left side, followed by Gabbie Chinnis (Charleston, SC/Charleston County School of Arts) doubling to center field for an RBI, bringing Knutson home. Riley Veenstra (Oakland, CA/Bishop O'Dowd) then singled, allowing Chinnis to score. Veenstra's single marked her second consecutive game with at least two hits. The inning concluded with Smith leading 2-1.

The third inning saw Emerson tie the game. Valentina Luciano scored on a single by Kari Sorensen, leveling the score at 2-2. In the seventh inning, Knutson singled to center field and advanced to third on a throwing error. Veenstra singled and advanced to second on a fielding error, driving in Knutson for the go-ahead run. Veenstra's contribution was pivotal, as she continued her streak of two-hit games. The Bears ended the inning ahead, 3-2.

Smith maintained its lead through the final inning, clinching the game with a 3-2 win over Emerson. Bailey Gray (Missouri City, TX/Ridge Point) pitched a complete game for Smith, allowing eight hits and two runs over 7 innings. Gray struck out five batters and walked just one, maintaining a WHIP of 1.29. With 109 pitches thrown, 74 were strikes. Gray's performance contributed to a record of 4-1 for the season.

Ally Knutson (Green Bay, WI/Bay Port) scored two runs and had two hits while also walking once. Gabbie Chinnis (Charleston, SC/Charleston County School of Arts) recorded a double and an RBI, adding a hit in her four at-bats. Riley Veenstra (Oakland, CA/Bishop O'Dowd) collected two hits and drove in two runs, showcasing her ability to bring runners home. Gray also added three hits offensively.

Smith holds a record of 9-8 and is 3-1 in conference play. Emerson has a record of 3-11 with a 1-3 mark in the conference.
