WELLESLEY, Mass. — The Smith College softball team fell twice on the road to Wellesley College on Saturday afternoon, dropping the opener 6-1 before being held to one hit in a 1-0 loss in the nightcap at Wellesley College. The Bears finish their slate at 16-21 overall and 8-12 in the NEWMAC.
Game 1: Wellesley 6, Smith 1
Wellesley used a pair of multi-run innings to break open a scoreless game, scoring twice in the third and three times in the fourth before tacking on an insurance run in the fifth. Violet Peverly (Granby, CT/Loomis Chaffee) took the loss in the circle for Smith, allowing five runs over 3.2 innings of work. Alana Robinson (Benicia, CA/Benicia) worked the final 2.1 innings in relief, surrendering one run on two hits.
Smith's lone run came in the top of the fifth. Lily Hackett (Concord, NH/Concord) drew a leadoff walk and was moved into scoring position when Ally Knutson (Green Bay, WI/Bay Port) singled to the pitcher and Gabbie Chinnis (Charleston, SC/Charleston County School of Arts) dropped a sacrifice bunt to advance the runners. Sophie Hasegawa (Palos Verdes Estates, CA/Palos Verdes) then lifted a sacrifice fly to center field to plate Hackett and put Smith on the board.
Knutson led the Bears at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a double from the leadoff spot. Taz Tamai (Cincinati, OH/The Seven Hills School) added a single up the middle in the third. Smith finished the game with three hits and four walks but stranded six baserunners against Wellesley starter Jill Colgan, who tossed a complete game.
Game 2: Wellesley 1, Smith 0
The nightcap was a tightly contested pitcher's duel that turned on a single swing. Bailey Gray (Missouri City, TX/Ridge Point) delivered a strong six-inning complete-game effort for the Bears, scattering five hits and surrendering just one earned run while walking none and striking out two on 58 pitches.
The decisive run came in the bottom of the fourth. With Brooklyn Awad in scoring position after a leadoff double, Emeline Gaunce singled to left field to drive her in for the game's only tally.
Offensively, Smith managed just one hit against Wellesley starter Lauren Seyller, who fired a complete-game one-hitter with eight strikeouts and no walks. Knutson accounted for the lone Smith hit with a double, extending her productive day at the plate.
The Bears conclude the season at 16-21 overall and 8-12 in NEWMAC play.
