May 08, 2026

NORTHAMPTON - Smith College has added Michelle Mtshali-Goodrich as the newest member of its athletic training staff, director of athletics and recreation Kristin Hughes has announced.

"We are incredibly fortunate to welcome Michelle to Smith Athletics," said Hughes. "Her experience and expertise are unparalleled. She will positively impact our student-athletes on a daily basis and strengthen our athletic training staff and overall approach to student-athlete well-being."

Mtshali-Goodrich spent the last 11 years at MIT on the athletic training staff. With the Engineers, she served as the primarily athletic trainer for the women's field hockey, women's lacrosse, women's lightweight crew and men's squash teams. She also assisted in coordinating care for the men's and women's cross country teams. During her time in Cambridge, she collaborated with MIT Sports Lab and Australia based PRISM Neuro to bridge applied research and athletic training practice, enhancing evidence-based approaches to athlete care. She also served on the Culture Steering and Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Committees, driving organizational initiatives that strengthened athlete and staff well-being.

Prior to MIT, she served as the head athletic trainer at Pine Manor College for five years. Before joining the Pine Manor staff, Mtshali-Goodrich was as an athletic training graduate assistant for Boston University from 2007-09. During this time, she coordinated care for the women's rugby team while also serving as a laboratory teaching assistant for various clinical courses in the athletic training program.

"I am excited to join Smith College and support the health, growth, and overall well-being of student-athletes through a holistic sports medicine approach," said Mtshali-Goodrich. "It is an honor to join a community dedicated to empowering individuals to thrive both in competition and in life as confident leaders capable of creating meaningful change in society."

Attaining both of her degrees at Boston University, Mtshali-Goodrich received a Master's in Health Education in 2009 after completing her Bachelor of Science degree in Athletic Training in 2006.
