CORTLAND, NY - Sophomore forward
Jenna Marsh (Barnstable, MA/Cape Cod Academy) scored her first goal of the season, but the Smith College soccer team was defeated by Cortland 2-1 Saturday afternoon. The Bears fall 20 0-1-1 on the year, while the Red Dragons improved to 2-0.
"Our coaching staff was proud of the how our players battled back for a late game push to get the game within one," said head coach
Kathy Brawn. "We've continually been impressed by the bar that this team has set and are looking to continue to build off of this momentum against Ithaca tomorrow."
GAME HIGHLIGHTS
First Half
- The Bears trailed 1-0 at halftime after Cortland scored in the eighth minute
- Riley Cioffi-Smith (North Branford, CT/Cheshire Academy) made four saves, including two in the final three minutes of the period
- The Bears held Cortland scoreless during a stretch of nearly 10 minutes in which Cortland generated four shots and three corner kicks
Second Half
- Gianna Cirilla doubled the Red Dragon lead in the 62nd minute, controlling a cross from the right side from Tyla Vuotto, a looping a right-footed shot off the left post and into the net to make it 2-0.
- Jenna Marsh's (Barnstable, MA/Cape Cod Academy) 73:49 goal off Amelia Dion's (Burlington, VT/Burlington) assist made it 2-1, which stood as the final score.
- The Bears did not concede after Marsh's goal despite Cortland recording five shots and two corner kicks the rest of the half.

- Cortland finished the game with a 25-2 advantage in shots and 10-1 Edge in corner kicks
- First year goalkeeper Riley Cioffi-Smith (North Branford, CT/Cheshire Academy) made four saves in her first game action of the year
