Box Score SOUTH HADLEY, Mass.--Vassar College went on a 9-4 run early in the second half to pull away from Smith College, topping the Pioneers 67-58 on the opening day of the Seven Sisters Classic on Saturday.
The game was back-and-forth in the early going, as
Ashani Petrizzi (Deerfield, Mass./Greenfield)'s layup gave Smith a 16-13 lead with 13:09 to play in the first half, only to see the Brewers take a 20-19 lead on a three from Brittany Parks at the 9:56 mark. Neither team led by more than three for the rest of the first half, when Parks scored five straight points to boost Vassar's advantage to 32-28 with 2:34 to play, and took a 36-32 lead into halftime.
Two straight baskets from Hannah Senftleber put Vassar in front 40-32 early in the second half, but a bucket from
Rosa Drummond (Rye, N.H./Portsmouth) followed by a layup by Devon Quattrochi off a
Lizzy BelBruno (Hanover, N.H./Hanover) pass trimmed the deficit to 42-38.
A layup by Parks at the 10:14 mark of the second half put Vassar up by as many as 13, while Smith struggled, missing nine consecutive shots before a Drummond jumper made 59-48 with 7:50 to play. A putback by
Sydney Parkmond (Waterbury, Conn./Chase Collegiate), and consecutive baskets by
Marissa Munoz-Ruiz (Fairfield, Calif./Justin-Siena) and Quattrochi cut the lead to seven with 4:08 remaining, but the Pioneers could get no closer.
Smith was led by 11 points and five rebounds apiece from Drummond and
