November 21, 2010

Box Score SOUTH HADLEY, Mass.--Amanda Zakoske (Jacksonville, Fla./The Bolles School) led four players in double figures as Smith College posted a 69-30 win over Bryn Mawr College on Sunday afternoon on the second day of the Seven Sisters Classic.

The Pioneers (2-2) led from start to finish in getting back to .500 on the season.  Zakoske led the way with 14 points, while Rosa Drummond (Rye, N.H./Portsmouth) and Jessica Welk (Arlington, Wash./Arlington) each added 13, and Sydney Parkmond (Waterbury, Conn./Chase Collegiate) had a season high 11.

Smith opened the game on a 12-1 run, hounding the Owls (0-2) into missing their first nine shots.  A stickback from Drummond gave Smith a 6-1 lead, and Devon Quattrocchi (Brewster, N.Y./Brewster)'s steal and coast-to-coast layup upped the advantage to 10-1.  Brittany Purington (Weare, N.H./John Stark)'s layup at the 8:17 mark of the first half gave Smith a 17 point lead at 24-7.

The Owls trimmed the lead to 26-16 on a pair of foul shots by Nicolette Parmese, but the Pioneers finished off the half on a 9-0 run starting by Marissa Munoz-Ruiz (Fairfield, Calif./Justin-Siena) feeding Quattrochi for a layup and finished in the same fashion, with Quattrochi giving Smith a 35-16 lead at halftime.

Smith stepped on the gas in the second half, limiting Bryn Mawr to just 14 points on 4-26 shooting.  The Pioneers scored the first eight points of the period, and holding the Owls scoreless for the first 5:39 of the half.

Drummond drained a triple that moved the lead over 30 points for the first time with 4:59 to play, and Munoz-Ruiz set the final margin of victory with a layup with two seconds remaining.

Drummond led the way on the glass with seven rebounds, while Purington and Munoz-Ruiz each grabbed six boards.  The Pioneers forced 27 turnovers and limited the Owls to 17.4% shooting for the game.

Parkmond and Quattrochi were named to the All-Tournament team.

Smith will play once more before the holiday break, facing Elms College on the road on Tuesday, November 23rd at 6 p.m.
