Basketball Falls To Trinity (Conn.)

Box Score NORTHAMPTON, Mass.--Trinity (Conn.) opened the game on a 17-3 run on their way to a 64-40 win over Smith College in non-conference basketball action on Saturday afternoon.

The Bantams (7-3) shot 58.6% in the first half and limited the Pioneers (5-5) to just seven first-half baskets to snap Smith's two game winning streak.

Amanda Zakoske (Jacksonville, Fla./The Bolles School) opened the game with a jumper on the opening possession, but Trinity reeled off nine straight points, as Kaitlin Ciarleglio nailed a three and set up Molly McGlynn for a basket, and Rebecca Cohn and Kristen Fahey both knocked down jumpers for a 9-2 lead.  After a foul shot from Devon Quattrocchi (Brewster, N.Y./Brewster), Trinity employed a 8-0 burst capped by two free throws from Carly Napier that boosted the Bantams' lead to 17-3.

Smith pulled within 12 on a layup by Zakoske with 7:30 left in the first half, only to see Trinity hit their final five shots of the period to go into halftime with a 41-17 lead.

The Pioneers stayed even with the Bantams in the second half, holding Trinity to 29% shooting in the final periodm including just 2-for-7 behind the three point arc.

Five straight points from Rosa Drummond (Rye, N.H./Portsmouth) early in the second half pulled the Pioneers within 22 points, but Trinity would not let Smith get any closer. 

Drummond led Smith with 12 points and a team high seven rebounds.  Cohn and Napier led the way with 12 points apiece for Trinity, who won the battle of the boards 44-34.  Cohn led the way with nine boards.

The game concluded Smith's first half schedule.  The Pioneers will be back in action on Jan. 5, when they resume NEWMAC play with a home tilt. vs. Wellesley College at 7 p.m.  Trinity will also be off until after the new year, when they play in the Bowdoin Classic in Jan. 2-3.
