BelBruno Powers Smith To First Conference Win

December 07, 2010

Box Score SOUTH HADLEY, Mass.--Lizzy BelBruno (Hanover, N.H./Hanover) broke out of a shooting slump with a season high 19 points as Smith College won their first New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) game of the year with a 59-46 win over Mt. Holyoke College.

The Pioneers (4-4, 1-2 NEWMAC) snapped a two game losing streak by holding the Lyons (1-6, 0-3 NEWMAC) to 32.7% shooting and connecting on seven of 13 shots from behind the three point stripe.

Rosa Drummond (Rye, N.H./Portsmouth) hit one of those threes with 14:29 left in the first half to give Smith a 10-4 lead, and after Amanda Zakoske (Jacksonville, Fla./The Bolles School) set up Sydney Parkmond (Waterbury, Conn./Chase Collegiate) for a layup at the 10:04 mark, Smith held a 17-8 lead, only to see Mt. Holyoke go on a 10-4 run over the next seven minutes to cut the lead to 21-18 with 3:18 left in the first half.  Devon Quattrocchi (Brewster, N.Y./Brewster) orchestrated a half-closing spurt that featured two more threes from BelBruno and Drummond that sent Smith into the locker room with a 29-22 lead.

Smith came out of the lockerroom on a tear, quickly opening up a 38-25 as BelBruno kicked off the half with yet another three, and an offensive rebound and stickback by Zakoske.  Mt. Holyoke got within eight points on a triple by Annabel Barrett with 11:16 to play, but BelBruno put the game to bed with consecutive threes that boosted the lead to 55-39 with 7:32 left.  Smith put the clamps on defense down the stretch, as Mt. Holyoke hit on on two of their final seven attempts en route to their fourth straight loss.

BelBruno, who had shot just 9-for-30 in her previous two games, finished with 19 points on an efficient 7-for-11 shooting, which included 5-of-7 from downtown.  Rosa Drummond (Rye, N.H./Portsmouth) also reached double figures with 10 points and a team high five rebounds.  Tricia Chase and Annabel Barrett led the way for Mt. Holyoke with 12 points apiece.

Smith will look to get back to .500 in NEWMAC play with a trip to Coast Guard on Thursday, Dec. 9 at 7:30 p.m.  Mt. Holyoke will host Clark.
