Field Hockey Comes Back To Stun Westfield State In Overtime

September 23, 2010

Box Score NORTHAMPTON, Mass.--First year Alexandra Stein knocked in her second goal of the game 59 seconds into overtime to lift Smith to a 4-3 come-from-behind win over Westfield State College on Wednesday afternoon.

Smith (3-3) found itself down 3-1 with three minutes of the second half gone, but score twice to force overtime.

Phoebe Hopkins (Philadelphia, Pa./Friends Select) got Smith on the board just three minutes into the game with an unassisted tally as the Pioneers dominated the second half, outshooting the Owls 17-7.

Smith could not make the dominance count, however, as Westfield State (3-3) tied the game with a goal from Alicia Gardener and went ahead just before halftime when Jessi Gould slipped the ball past Smith goalie Sora Harris-Vincent (Plainfield, Vt./U-32).

The Owls added to the lead three minutes after the break with Gould's second goal of the game, but Alexa DeJesus (Somerset, Mass./Somerset) notched her second goal of the season to cut the lead to 3-2.

Stein leveled the scores with her first goal in the 53rd minute, and just into the overtime, controlled a high pass from Dari Goulden (Rutledge, Pa./Strath Haven) and knocked it past WSC 'keeper Amanda McCarthy.

"I'm extremely proud of my team," said head coach Jaime Ginsberg.  "We're happy to get our first win on the new turf.  Everybody knew they had a role to play, and they did it well."

Harris-Vincent made eight saves in net before making way for Savannah Lawson (Oak Bluffs, Mass./Martha's Vineyard), who made two saves.  McCarthy made 19 saves for Westfield State.

Smith will return to NEWMAC play when they play host to Babson College on September 25.  Game time is at 1 p.m.  Westfield State will take on Elms on September 23.
