Smith Deals Wellesley First NEWMAC Loss

January 05, 2011

Box Score NORTHAMPTON, Mass.--There were some leftover Christmas gifts for the Smith College basketball team this winter.  Playing their first game in nearly a month, the Pioneers used a near fully healthy roster and a double-double from Rosa Drummond (Rye, N.H./Portsmouth) to defeat Wellesley College 60-52 on Wednesday night.

Able to call on Libby Dutton (Deering, N.H./Hillsboro-Deering) and Ashani Petrizzi (Deerfield, Mass./Greenfield), only appeared in three games combined thus far this season, the Pioneers showcased their depth as every player who got in the game scored, and Smith (6-5, 3-2 NEWMAC) outrebounded Wellesley (7-4, 4-1 NEWMAC) 44-30 while sending the Blue to their third consecutive loss and first in NEWMAC play.

Drummond got the action going when she kept the opening possesion alive with an offensive board, followed by a basket, then set up Sydney Parkmond (Waterbury, Conn./Chase Collegiate) for another.  Drummond sandwiched a basket and a three around a bucket from Amanda Zakoske (Jacksonville, Fla./The Bolles School), and the Pioneers had an 11-4 lead not four minutes into the game.

Becca Kimball's basket at the 12:49 mark of the first half cut Smith's lead to 13-9, but Dutton and Lizzy BelBruno (Hanover, N.H./Hanover) drained threes on consecutive possesions to cap an 8-0 spurt that extended the advantage to 21-9.

The Pioneers limited the Blue to seven first half field goals, and held Wellesley without a basket for the final 3:52 of the first half to take a 33-19 lead into halftime.

Wellesley moved within 11 on Malia Maier's three 57 seconds into the second half, but Smith kept the Blue at bay, going up by as many as 16 on Jessica Welk (Arlington, Wash./Arlington)'s jumper at the 7:31 mark.  The Blue scored seven straight points, the final of which were a conventional three point play from Kimball that trimmed the deficit to 48-39 with 5:11 to play, and after Leslie Leong knocked down a three, Wellesley was within eight with 2:43 left in the game.  Marissa Munoz-Ruiz (Fairfield, Calif./Justin-Siena) and BelBruno knocked down three of four free throws in the final 1:03 to keep Smith's lead at a healthy 12 points before Leong's two baskets set the final margin.

Drummond poured in 18 points and pulled down a career high 14 rebounds for her second double-double this season.  BelBruno tossed 13, sinking five of seven from the charity stripe.  Ashleigh Sargent and Leslie Leong led Wellesley with 15 points and six rebounds apiece.

Smith will look to stay undefeated in 2011 when they play host to Massachusetts Institute of Technology on Saturday at 2 p.m.  Wellesley will host Springfield College, also at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
