Libby Dutton (Deering, N.H./Hillsboro-Deering) scored 10 of her game high 14 points in the first half as the Smith College basketball team rolled to a 54-38 win over MIT on Saturday afternoon.
The Pioneers (7-5, 4-2 NEWMAC) held MIT to 29% shooting en route to their fourth straight league win and sending the Engineers (5-7, 1-5 NEWMAC) to their fifth loss in six games.
MIT took an early 6-5 lead on a three by Tamara Pena, but Smith put the game to bed early with a 12-2 run. Dutton supplied eight points in the critical burst, sandwiching a pair of threes around a fast-break layup that gave Smith a 17-8 lead with 10:46 left in the opening half.
Smith kept their foot on the gas pedal, holding MIT scoreless over the final 4:02 while extended the lead out to 20 points thanks to four free throws by
Rosa Drummond (Rye, N.H./Portsmouth) and a layup by
Brittany Purington (Weare, N.H./John Stark). Smith took a 34-14 lead at halftime.
The Pioneers kept the intensity up after intermission, as Drummond opened the half with five consecutive points for a 37-16 lead.
Sydney Parkmond (Waterbury, Conn./Chase Collegiate) drained a jumper with 7:07 to play that gave Smith its biggest lead at 26 points, before the Engineers closed the game on a 7-0 run.
Dutton led all scorers with 14 points on 5-for-9 shooting, while Drummond tossed in 13 points, pulled down a team high nine rebounds, and added two blocks and two steals.
Ashani Petrizzi (Deerfield, Mass./Greenfield) also pulled down nine boards. Rachel Hunt led MIT with 11 points and six rebounds.
Smith will next be in action on Wednesday, Jan. 12 when they host Clark University at 7 p.m. MIT will host Wheaton at 7 p.m. on Jan. 12.
