Smith Shut Out By MIT, 4-0

October 01, 2011

Box Score NORTHAMPTON, Mass.--Massachusetts Institute of Technology scored twice in the first 10 minutes en route to a 4-0 victory over Smith College in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference field hockey action on a soaking wet Saturday afternoon.

Anna Teruya and Kameron Klauber each scored twice for the Engineers, who improved to 10-2 overall and 2-1 in NEWMAC play.  Smith fell to 2-7 and 0-3 in the NEWMAC.

MIT got on the board with just 3:43 played, as Kimberly Barker and Teruya combined on a 2-on-0 fast break and Barker slid a pass that Teruya slid past Smith goalie Savannah Lawson (Oak Bluffs, Mass./Martha's Vineyard).   After a penalty corner four minutes later, MIT got their second, as Teruya scored off a Molly McShane pass.

Lawson was forced into three saves in sucession, denying Katie Kauffman, Klauber, and Molly Duffy, but Klauber made it 3-0 at the 12:31 mark, and added a second goal seven minutes later for a 4-0 lead with 19:30 played in the first half.

Smith sprang into life just before the halftime break, as Phoebe Hopkins (Philadelphia, Pa./Friends Select)' shot from the top of the circle was saved by Casey Landry, and Allie Stein (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) followed up with two rebounds but were kept out by the MIT goalie.  The Pioneers' best chance of the second half was 10 minutes in, as Stein was denied by Landry, and Grace Maliska (Winchendon, Mass./Murdock) put the rebound wide.

Lawson was spectacular in the second half, making eight of her 17 saves in the final stanza to keep the Engineers off the scoreboard.  It was her fifth game this year with at least 15 saves.  Landry made four saves for MIT, playing the first 63 minutes, before making way for Jenna Klein, who was not called upon to make a save.

Both teams face crucial NEWMAC contests in their next outings - Smith will next be in action against Springfield College on Tuesday, October 4 at 7 p.m.  MIT will host WPI on the same date at 6 p.m.
