Game Preview: Field Hockey vs. Wellesley

October 15, 2011

NORTHAMPTON, Mass.--The Smith College field hockey team (4-8, 1-4 NEWMAC) looks to keep the momentum of consecutive wins  going when they host Wellesley College (6-7, 2-2 NEWMAC) in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m.

Last Meeting:  Wellesley came back from a 2-0 deficit to snatch a 3-2 double-overtime win on October 16, 2010.  Nia Spooner (Bronx, N.Y./Fieldston School) gave Smith a 2-0 lead with a pair of goals in the first 11 minutes, but Wellesley responded with two goals in the next seven minutes.  The game went without a goal until 1:23 into the second overtime period, when Madeleine Whitaker scored on a breakaway to end the game.

Last Smith Win: The Pioneers took a 2-0 halftime lead, then held off the Blue for a 5-3 win on October 7, 2006.

Smith Overview: Smith is entering today's game with a real chance to get back into the NEWMAC playoff race.  If the Pioneers should win their remaining three league games (today against Wellesley, at Wheaton on October 22, and home to WPI on October 29), they would hold a league record of 4-4.  With the top six teams qualifying, no team with a record of 4-4 has finished out of the top six since 1997, when the league was still known as the New England Women's Eight.

Wellesley Overview: Under the direction of first year head coach Julia King, the Blue made a bright start to the season, winning four consecutive games to open the season.  Since then, however, Wellesley has lost seven of nine.  At 2-2 in league play, Wellesley sits in a three way tie for fourth place with WPI and Springfield.

Smith Player to Watch: Allie Stein (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) is in exceptional form, hitting for seven goals in the last three games, including hat tricks against Clark and Western New England.  In the wins against Clark and WNE, she scored both overtime game winners.

Wellesley Player to Watch: Emily Lewis has 10 goals this season, good for the team lead and tied for sixth in the league.  The sophomore has four games with two goals each.

Did you know? Wellesley is one of the original members of the Seven Sisters, along with Smith, Vassar, Mount Holyoke, Bryn Mawr, Barnard, and Radcliffe.  Originally seven distinctive all-women's colleges, Vassar is now co-educational and Radcliffe merged with Harvard University.
