Box Score NORTHAMPTON, Mass.--
Allie Stein (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) netted her 17th and 18th goals of the season as the Smith College field hockey team closed out 2011 with a 4-2 loss to Worcester Polytechnic Institute on Monday. The final 8:31 was played 50 hours after the game was suspended due to the October nor'easter that covered the Pioneer Valley with up to a foot of snow.
Smith finishes their season with a 4-13 record, and 1-7 in NEWMAC play. WPI improves to 11-6, with a 4-4 NEWMAC record. The win gives WPI a NEWMAC tournament berth for the first time since 2009. Before the game, Smith honored their three seniors;
Ashleigh King (Enfield, N.H./Mascoma),
Sora Harris-Vincent (Plainfield, Vt./U-32), and
Phoebe Hopkins (Philadelphia, Pa./Friends Select), who were playing in their final game for the Pioneers.
WPI took control of the game by scoring three times in a six minute span in the first half. Mary-Lee Barboza beat
Savannah Lawson (Oak Bluffs, Mass./Martha's Vineyard) in traffic to open the scoring at 17:49, and Sasha Marokhovsky made it 2-0 with a solo effort three minutes later. Smith immediately called time, but Chelsea Cook triple the Engineers' advantage with her first goal of the season at the 23:26 mark.
Smith broke up the shutout with 2:17 left in the first half.
Sydney Burns (Woodbury, N.J./George School (Pa.)) pass in front of the net was deflected by Engineers' goalie Liz Dufresne, but the ball fell to the stick of Stein, who slammed home her 17th goal of the year and cut the deficit to 3-1 at halftime.
The snow, which had started falling lightly towards the end of the first half, became bigger and heavier, and the teams played 26:29 of the first half before officials halted play on Saturday.
The game resumed on Monday afternoon, and Smith controlled the early play, throwing a scare into the Engineers when Stein found the back of the cage again with three minutes to play in the game, but Smith could not find any more goals.
Lawson played 64:06 in cage for Smith, making three saves in the game and 213 on the season, tying the fourth best single season mark in school history. Harris-Vincent played 5:54 in her final collegiate game. Dufresne made three saves for WPI, who will play an as-yet-to-be-determined opponent in the upcoming NEWMAC tournament on Wednesday, November 2.
