NORTHAMPTON, Mass.--Two teams looking for their first win in NEWMAC play will square off when Smith College (2-6, 0-3 NEWMAC) pays a visit to Springfield College (0-8, 0-2 NEWMAC) on Tuesday evening. The game begins at 7 p.m.
Last meeting: The goals came by the boatload as Springfield scored a 9-4 win over Smith on October 5, 2010. The Pride opened up a 4-0 lead by halftime, then made it 5-0 25 seconds into the second half. Smith got on the board with
Nia Spooner (Bronx, N.Y./Fieldston School)'s goal, but the Pride tacked on four more for a 9-1 lead. Smith got back three of the goals in the final 10 minutes, with
Phoebe Hopkins (Philadelphia, Pa./Friends Select),
Allie Stein (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer), and
Alexa DeJesus (Somerset, Mass./Somerset) all finding the back of the cage.
Last Smith Win: October 29, 2002 - Smith sent Springfield to their seventh consecutive loss - 1-0.
Smith Overview: The Pioneers are looking to snap a conference losing streak that dates all the way back to 2008. Smith has not won a NEWMAC game since an 8-3 win over WPI on October 21 of that year - a span of 21 games.
Springfield Overview: The Pride have struggled to far this season, scoring just seven goals in eight games while failing to win any of their games. Springfield fell in their most recent game to Wellesley, 2-1 in overtime on October 1.
Smith Player to Watch: Phoebe Hopkins (Philadelphia, Pa./Friends Select). Hopkins may not have scored against MIT on Saturday, but she was at the heart of everything Smith tried to do offensively. She currently sits in fifth place on Smith's all-time goal list with 27.
Springfield Player to Watch: Emily Rogers - Rogers leads the team in defensive saves, playing in all the games save one for Springfield.
