Squash Moves to 3-1 With Sweep Of Haverford and Wellesley

CAMBRIDGE, Mass.--The Smith College squash team won six matches by 3-0 sweeps en route to an 8-1 win over Haverford College, followed up by a 5-4 win over Wellesley to improve to 3-1 on the season.

In the opener against the Fords, Smith won the first six matches, including an 11-7, 11-7, 11-7 win by Jacqueline Zhou (Singapore, Singapore/) over Caroline Nightingale at No. 1, and Clair Oblamski (Brookfield, Wis./Brookfield East) rolled to a 11-0, 11-0, 11-3 win at No. 2.  Helen Queenan (Wellesley, Mass./Newton Country Day) earned a 3-0 win at No. 3 over Katherine Pryor by an 11-8, 11-6, 11-3 count, and Joanne Poon captured Smith's fourth point with a 11-3, 11-3, 11-5 win over Alex Love.

Eunice Zhao (Las Vegas, Nev./Liberty) matched that score with an 11-3, 11-3, 11-5 win at No. 5, and Jen Krain, playing in her first match of the year, rolled to a 11-2, 11-0, 11-0 win at No. 6.

The Fords picked up their lone point when Roxanne Jaffe beat Elena Plesco (Chinisau, Moldova/Iulia Hasdeu) 13-11, 8-11, 11-4, 11-9, and Szilvia B. Kiss and XiZhu Zhao wrapped up the win at No. 8 and No. 9.  Kiss beat Samara Flug 2-11, 11-3, 11-4, 11-7, and Zhao rebounded from a first game loss with a 7-11, 11-8, 11-7, 11-8 win.

In the second match against Wellesley, Smith got wins at the top, middle, and bottom of the lineup to edge out the Blue, 5-4.

Jacquline Zhou improved to 4-0 in the season with an 11-8, 8-11, 9-11, 11-6, 11-8 win at No. 1, but the Blue got wins at No. 2 and No. 3 to take the lead before Smith edged back in front with 3-0 wins from Joanne Poon and Eunice Zhao (Las Vegas, Nev./Liberty).

Poon swept Margo Salmont 11-7, 11-4, 11-3, and Zhao beat Haley Vasquez 11-8, 11-6, 11-9.  The Blue got their last two points with wins at No. 6 and No. 7, but Smith sealed the win with another set of sweeps.

Catie Blunt (Boston, Mass./Commonwealth) tied the match at four with an 11-6, 13-11, 13-11 win at No. 8, and Szilvia B. Kiss clinched the victory with an 11-0, 11-5, 11-2 win at No. 9.

Smith will next take on Mount Holyoke College and Tufts University, with both matches being played at the Mount Holyoke campus on November 19 at 10 a.m. and 12 noon, respectively.
