Pioneers Open The Season With Win Over Westfield State

November 15, 2011

Box Score NORTHAMPTON, Mass.--Rosa Drummond (Rye, N.H./Portsmouth) led all players with 15 points and eight rebounds as the Smith College basketball team opened the season with a 60-55 win over Westfield State University at the 20th Annual Tyler Tip-Off on Tuesday night.

The Pioneers (1-0) got out to a hot start, as Ellie Giles (Charlottesville, Va./St. Annes Belfield) hit a jumper on the games opening possession, and Amanda Zakoske (Jacksonville, Fla./The Bolles School) forced a turnover and fed Devon Quattrocchi (Brewster, N.Y./Brewster) for a layup that forced the Owls (0-1) into a timeout with just a minute of the game played.

Smith extended the lead to 12-8 on consecutive threes from Quattrocchi and Drummond, but the Owls responded with seven consecutive points, culminating with a three pointer by Janae Jones for their first lead of the game at 14:24.

After Smith had taken the lead back with five straight Drummond points, and after the Owls used another three to go back up 18-17, Drummond sank her third three pointer of the half to give Smith the lead back at 20-18.  The Owls reeled off a 9-4 run capped by a triple from Angela Paterson to take the lead back at 27-24, only to Smith level the scores again at 27 on a three from Lizzy BelBruno (Hanover, N.H./Hanover).

Level is how the scores remained at halftime, tied at 33, and out of the break, the Owls eked out to a 44-39 lead on a three and a pair of free throws by Jen Ashton.  Sydney Parkmond (Waterbury, Conn./Chase Collegiate)'s layup got the comeback started with 9:22 to to play, and BelBruno's three, followd by a jumper in the corner from Quattrocchi to take the lead for good with 6:31 to play.  Parkmond set up Giles for a basketball that made it 52-48, and Westfield State never got closer than one point the rest of the way.   Smith knocked down four of five free throws down the stretch to seal the win.

BelBruno added 13 points as the only other Pioneer in double-figures. Quattrocchi had nine points and five assists. Waitt had 13 points to lead Westfield State.

Smith will next be in action at the Nazareth Invitational, where they will play SUNY-Brockport on November 19 at 6 p.m.  Westfield State will play Salve Regina University at the Keene State College Tip-Off Classic on November 18 at 5 p.m.
