NORTHAMPTON, Mass.--The New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) season gets underway tonight when the Smith College basketball team (4-0, 0-0 NEWMAC) host Mount Holyoke College (1-3, 0-0 NEWMAC) on Wednesday night. Smith will be going for their fifth straight win over the Lyons.
Last Meeting: Rosa Drummond (Rye, N.H./Portsmouth) netted
20 points as Smith posted a 56-46 win over Mount Holyoke on February 3, 2011. Down 28-27 at halftime, Smith knocked down five of their first six shots in the second half to take the lead for good. Smith completed a season sweep of Mount Holyoke for the second straight year.
Smith Overview: Off to their best start in 10 years, Smith improved to 4-0 with a 76-51 win over Elms College on November 22. The Pioneers received yet another solid outing from Drummond, who poured in 19 points, upping her average to 18.5 points per game for the season. Smith shot 48.5% (32-66) from the field and outrebounded the Blazers 38-29.
Mount Holyoke Overview: The Lyons have won just one of their first four games, a 66-53 triumph over Western New England University on November 20. Mount Holyoke put a scare into defending national champion Amherst College in their last game, holding the Jeffs to 33% shooting and trailed 21-18 at halftime before Amherst pulled away in second half.
Smith Player to Watch: Ellie Giles (Charlottesville, Va./St. Annes Belfield) has pulled down a team high 33 rebounds, an average of 8.3 per game, and collected a career high 14 boards against Elms.
Mount Holyoke Player to Watch: Senior Christine Chancy leads the team with 11.2 points per game.
Did you know? Smith's first ever win over Mount Holyoke came on February 13, 1972. Smith recorded a 47-36 win over the Lyons, en route to an 8-0 season.
