Squash Opens With Split At Guy Fawkes Challenge

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y.--There was a pair of wins for first year Jacqueline Zhou (Singapore, Singapore/) on her collegiate debut as the Smtih College squash team opened the season against Vassar College and Haverford College at the Guy Fawkes Challenge, hosted by Vassar on Saturday.

The opening match against the hosts saw Smith fall by a 6-3 count.  Zhou earned Smith a point with a 10-12, 11-5, 11-2, 11-5 win over Meg Taylor at No. 1, while Jaimi Inskeep (Warrenville, Ill./Wheaton Warrenville So.) defeated Katie Cornish in five sets at No. 8 with a 11-4, 11-9, 8-11, 9-11, 11-6 win.  Catie Blunt (Boston, Mass./Commonwealth) nabbed a three set win over Amanda Scott at No. 9, 11-9, 14-12, 11-4. 

Clair Oblamski (Brookfield, Wis./Brookfield East) fell in a tough five set match, going back and forth with Libby Pei before losing 11-6, 7-11, 11-6, 7-11, 9-11 at No. 2, while Joanne Poon played one of the longest sets in recent Smith memory in a 3-1 loss at No. 5, falling 5-11, 6-11, 20-18, 5-11.

The Pioneers (1-1) cruised to a 9-0 win over the Fords in the second match, with seven of the nine matches being three set sweeps.  Zhou earned her second win of the day with an 11-6, 11-1, 11-7 win over Caroline Nightengale, and Oblamski swept Kira Jones 11-3, 11-3, 11-2 at No. 2.  Helen Queenan (Wellesley, Mass./Newton Country Day) beat Katherine Pryor 11-5, 11-3, 11-5 at No. 3, and Eunice Zhao (Las Vegas, Nev./Liberty) rebounded from a first set loss to win 14-16, 11-9, 11-8, 11-4 at No. 4. 

Poon made a clean sweep of Alex Love at No. 5, winning 11-3, 11-7, 11-3, and XiZhu Zhao won in the only match that went to five sets with an 11-8, 10-12, 13-11, 7-11, 11-3 at No. 6.  Szilvia B. Kiss beat Randee Johnson 11-8, 11-8, 11-7 at No. 7, while Inskeep swept Zoe Becker 11-2, 11-9, 11-6 at No. 8, and Blunt completed the win with a 11-0, 11-1, 11-0 win over Mimi Fuchs at No. 9.

Smith will next be in action on November 12, where they will face Haverford again, at 10 a.m., followed by a meeting with Wellesley College at 1 p.m.
