Smith Ends Semester On A High Note

December 14, 2011

Box Score PITTSFIELD, Mass.--Rosa Drummond (Rye, N.H./Portsmouth) drained two three pointers in the final minute to lead Smith College to a 64-59 win over the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts in non-conference women's basketball action on Wednesday night.  Smith ends the semester with a record of 8-2, while MCLA falls to 5-4.

Drummond finished with 20 points, eight rebounds, two steals and a blocked shot, while shooting 50 percent from the floor (8-16).  Devon Quattrocchi (Brewster, N.Y./Brewster) filled up the stat sheet as well, scoring 12 points, passing out six assists, pulling down five rebounds, and recording seven steals.  Lizzy BelBruno (Hanover, N.H./Hanover) was the third Pioneer in double figures, totalling 13 points, while Ellie Giles (Charlottesville, Va./St. Annes Belfield) just missed a double-double with eight points and 10 boards.

The game would seesaw over the next few minutes leading to Drummond's barrage at the end.  With MCLA holding a slim 55-53 after a Lucy Tremblay free throw, Drummond connected from the top of the key putting Smith up 56-55 with 2:13 to play.  After a defensive stop, Smith's Devon Quattrochi hit the back end of a two shot foul pushing the lead to two.

MCLA's Alie Dobrovolc slashed to the bucket tying the game at 57 apiece with 1:12 left.  Drummond answered quickly with a triple off a nice feed from Quattrochi on the next possession.  Tremblay answered for the Trailblazers with a jumper, but Drummond once again buried the dagger with 25 seconds left in regulation.

The opening period was controlled by Smith.  MCLA scored the opening four points of the game before Smith answered with a 9-0 run to take an early 9-4 advantage.  MCLA quickly responded to tie the game before the Pioneers used another burst to open up their largest lead of the half at 29-17. The Trailblazers responded with an 11-6 spurt to close the margin to 35-28 at the break.

Smith will be off until after the New Year, when they will host Massachusetts Institute of Technology on January 4 at 7 p.m.  MCLA will be back in action on December 30, when they will face the University of Southern Maine in the Southern Maine Holiday Invitational at 6 p.m.
