NORTHAMPTON, Mass.--Only one member of the current Smith College basketball team was over the age of five the last time the Pioneers won six consecutive games to start the season. (More on that below). Nonetheless, Smith (5-0, 1-0 NEWMAC) will look to continue their unbeaten start to the season when they play at Wheaton College (2-3, 1-0 NEWMAC) on Saturday at 2 p.m.
Last Meeting: Smith beat the Lyons for for the first time in five years with a
56-48 win on February 12, 2011. The Senior Day win clinched a home playoff game for Smith behind
17 points from Rosa Drummond (Rye, N.H./Portsmouth) and 13 points from Amanda Zakoske.
Smith Overview: Smith won their fifth consecutive game with a
66-33 win over Mount Holyoke College on Wednesday night.
Maddie Page (Arvada, Colo./Jefferson Acad.) came off the bench to score 18 points, as Smith opened up a 17-2 lead eight minutes in and led 32-9 at halftime. The Pioneers shot a sizzling 55.3% from the field while limiting Mount Holyoke to 24.4% (10-for-41) shooting.
Wheaton Overview: The Lyons snapped a two game losing skid with a
58-43 win over then-unbeaten Coast Guard in their conference opener on Wednesday. Wheaton
outrebounded the Bears 44-29 and got 11 points from Jeana Trimboli.
Smith Player to Watch: Page had a breakout game, repeatedly slashing to the basket for easy layups. The first year guard also led all players with eight rebounds.
Wheaton Player to Watch: Senior Gabbie DePalo averages 9.2 points per game, along with 7.0 rebounds, and shoots 52.8% from the field.
Did you know? The aforementioned player who was older than five is
Ellie Giles (Charlottesville, Va./St. Annes Belfield). Smith won six games in a row to start the 1995-96 season, which was arguably the most successful in school history. The Pioneers won a school record 19 games and earned the first ECAC tournament berth in program history.
