MIDDLETOWN, Conn.--The Smith College squash team equalled their win total from all of 2010-11 with a pair of wins at the Wesleyan Round Robin this past weekend. The Pioneers improved to 5-6 on the season with wins over Colgate and William Smith.
Smith fell in their opening matchup against Tufts, with the Jumbos winning 8-1.
Jacqueline Zhou (Singapore, Singapore/) earned Smith's only point with an 11-9, 11-8, 11-7 win over Jessica Rubine at No. 1.
Jennifer Krain (Rosemont, Pa./Harriton) fell in a tough match at No. 6 10-12, 11-13, 12-10, 8-11, and
Elena Plesco (Chinisau, Moldova/Iulia Hasdeu) went to five games at No. 8 before losing 4-11, 11-6, 6-11, 11-8, 3-11.
The Pioneers rolled to a 9-0 win over Colgate, with eight of the nine matches going three sets. Zhou, Krain, and Plesco all cruised, along with wins for
Clair Oblamski (Brookfield, Wis./Brookfield East), Joanne Poon,
Eunice Zhao (Las Vegas, Nev./Liberty),
Helen Queenan (Wellesley, Mass./Newton Country Day),
Jaimi Inskeep (Warrenville, Ill./Wheaton Warrenville So.), and
Catie Blunt (Boston, Mass./Commonwealth).
Zhou beat Emily Miller 11-6, 11-3, 11-8, while Oblamski knocked off Sarah Bassett 11-7, 11-3, 11-1 at No. 2. Poon lost the first game but came back to win 7-11, 11-7, 11-3, 11-5 at No. 3, and
Eunice Zhao (Las Vegas, Nev./Liberty) swept past Katherine Schultz 11-6, 11-5, 11-4 at No. 4. Queenan swept Rosario Gallagher 11-4, 11-4, 11-0 at No. 5 and Krain did the same to Carissa Blossom by a score of 11-1, 11-2, 11-3. Inskeep toppled Jasmine Smith 11-5, 11-7, 11-8, followed by Plesco over Mel Grover Schwartz 11-0, 11-7, 11-7, and Blunt ended proceedings with an 11-3, 11-2, 11-3 win over Annie Langford.
Smith picked up their second straight win with an 8-1 victory over William Smith. Zhou defeated Caroline Moxley 11-2, 11-2, 11-2, at No. 1, and Oblamski beat Olivia Beckwith 11-4, 11-3, 11-0 at No. 2. Poon added a four game win over Ginny McDermott 12-10, 11-4, 7-11, 11-8 at No. 3, while Queenan overcame a first-game loss to win at No. 5 7-11, 11-5, 11-7, 11-2.
Krain beat Sarah Cutts 11-7, 11-4, 11-7 at No. 6, and Inskeep beat Nellie Lindecke 11-5, 11-7, 11-6 at No. 7. Plesco swept Molly Doran 11-4, 11-3, 11-4, and
Catie Blunt (Boston, Mass./Commonwealth) closed out the win with an 11-4, 11-8, 9-11, 14-12 win at No. 9.
In Sunday's matches, Smith fell to Mount Holyoke and Wesleyan. Against the Lyons for the second time this year,
Vivian Lee (Seoul, South Korea/Yongsan International School of Seoul) grabbed Smith's only win with an 11-6, 11-5, 11-6 win at No. 9, and Smith was swept by the hosts Wesleyan, with Queenan coming closes with win with a 7-11, 7-11, 11-8, 6-11 loss at No. 5.
