PRINCETON, N.J.--Wins at No. 5 through No. 9 propelled the Smith College squash team to the semifinals of the D Division of the Howe Cup on Friday with a 5-4 win over Boston College. Smith will take on Georgetown University on Saturday morning for a trip to the final.
After the Eagles had swept the top four positions, Smith rallied, beginning at No. 5 with an 11-4, 11-7, 11-9 win by
Jennifer Krain (Rosemont, Pa./Harriton), and
Elizabeth Guyman (Seattle, Wash./Lakeside) battled out a 3-2 win at No. 6, winning 11-3, 8-11, 11-13, 12-10, 11-8.
Xizhu Zhao (Beijing, China/Beijing No. 4) went five sets to win at No. 9 for an 8-11, 11-9, 11-9, 9-11, 12-10 victory, and when
Elena Plesco (Chinisau, Moldova/Iulia Hasdeu) pulled off a 3-1 win at No. 8, (8-11, 16-14, 11-8, 11-9), the match was tied.
Catie Blunt (Boston, Mass./Commonwealth) then capped the comeback with a flawless 3-0 win at No. 7 with an 11-5, 11-5, 11-7 victory.
The Pioneers, seeded third in the D Division Epps Cup, will face the seventh seeded Hoyas, who were upset winners over second seeded St. Lawrence, at 11:30 am tomorrow morning.
