NORTHAMPTON, Mass.--When the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference semifinal between Smith College and Worcester Polytechnic Institute is over, one streak or another will end. Smith currently boasts a seven game winning streak, but the Engineers have won their last 10 matchups with the Pioneers.
The Pioneers (16-9) and Engineers (18-6) will meet for the third time this season, on Saturday, February 26, in the day's second semifinal, slated for a 3 p.m. start. The first game of the day will feature top-seeded and nationally ranked No. 4 Babson College against fourth seeded Springfield College at 1 p.m. The two winners will play on Sunday at 1 p.m. with the winner of that contest receiving an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.
Smith and WPI kicked off their respective NEWMAC seasons with a December 1 matchup in Northampton that the Engineers took 58-53. Smith trailed by six at halftime, but closed to within one with 1:03 left in the game. WPI sank three free throws in the final 38 seconds to seal the win.
Lizzy BelBruno (Hanover, N.H./Hanover) and
Amanda Zakoske (Jacksonville, Fla./The Bolles School) each scored 13 points for Smith, who lost despite holding WPI to 34% shooting for the game.
In the rematch in Worcester, Smith led through outhe first half in a low scoring contest. The Pioneers took a 20-15 lead into intermission, only to see the Engineers drain eight second half three point shots and shoot 65% from the floor in the second half to take the season series.
Smith has not defeated WPI since a 56-44 win on February 3, 2004.
