NORTHAMPTON, Mass.--The return to Ainsworth Gym was much needed, and the Smith College basketball team found their shooting touch in the second half to beat Mt. Holyoke 56-46 to snap a three game losing streak on Wednesday night.

Rosa Drummond (Rye, N.H./Portsmouth) poured in 20 points and hauled in seven rebounds as the Pioneers (10-9, 7-6 NEWMAC), playing at home for the first time since January 19, shot 54.5% in the second half to move back over .500.

Drummond netted the game's first basket, but Mt. Holyoke scored nine of the next 11 points on Christine Chancy's fast break layup with 15:50 to play.  Back-to-back buckets from Devon Quattrocchi (Brewster, N.Y./Brewster) and Sydney Parkmond (Waterbury, Conn./Chase Collegiate) trimmed the lead to 9-8, only to see the Lyons (5-14, 3-10 NEWMAC) rattle off a 9-0 run that boosted the lead to 17-8.

Smith responded with a mini-burst of their own, started by Drummond knocking down a triple from the right wing, and Jessica Welk (Arlington, Wash./Arlington) sandwiched a pair of jumpers around a three from Libby Dutton (Deering, N.H./Hillsboro-Deering) that gave Smith the lead back at 18-17.  Mt. Holyoke stormed back countered with a three from Angelica Pascual and a hoop from Tricia Chase to take a 25-20 lead with 6:05 left in the first half, and took a 28-27 lead into halftime.

The Pioneers came out in the second half red hot, knocking down five of their first six shots to take the lead for good.  Amanda Zakoske (Jacksonville, Fla./The Bolles School)'s twisting layup in traffic extended the Smith advantage to 41-32, and though Mt. Holyoke got within five via a three pointer from Anabel Barrett, the Lyons would get no closer the rest of the way.  Drummond scored six points in an 10-2 run, finished by Ashani Petrizzi (Deerfield, Mass./Greenfield)'s basket with 4:50 to play that gave Smith a 50-39 lead.  The Pioneers knocked down four of seven foul shots to seal the win.

Smith held Mt. Holyoke to a mere eight second half baskets, while winning the battle of the boards 33-28, including 11-8 on the offensive end.  In addition to Drummond's second consecutive game of 20+ points, Smith also received a 10 point, seven rebound effort from Parkmond.  Angelica Pascual led Mt. Holyoke with 19 points, and Chase added 11.

Smith will host the United States Coast Guard Academy on Saturday, February 5 at 2 p.m.  Mt. Holyoke will host Clark University, also on February 5.  That game will tip-off at 1 p.m.
