NORTHAMPTON, Mass.--The Smith College squash team took third place in the Seven Sisters Championship this weekend, defeating Wellesley College 6-3 after falling to Mt. Holyoke 9-0 in the day's opening match.
Against the Blue, Smith received solid performances all the way around, particularly from
Eunice Zhao (Las Vegas, Nev./Liberty), who knocked off Margot Sulmont in a marathon match at No. 4, winning 11-7, 15-13, 11-7, and
Elizabeth Guyman (Seattle, Wash./Lakeside), who went four sets with Jennifer Hsu at No. 6, wining 9-11, 12-10, 11-3, 11-2.
Helen Queenan (Wellesley, Mass./Newton Country Day) defeated Dorothy Vickery 11-5, 11-4, 11-6 at No. 3, and Smith also received wins from
Jennifer Krain (Rosemont, Pa./Harriton) at No. 5 (11-4, 11-5, 11-6), and
Catie Blunt (Boston, Mass./Commonwealth) at No. 7, who won 11-6, 11-9, 11-9. There was also a first regulation win for
Xizhu Zhao (Beijing, China/Beijing No. 4), won toppled Charlene Lee 12-10, 11-6, 10-12, 11-3 at No. 9.
Earlier in the day, Mt. Holyoke defeated the Pioneers, 9-0, winning eight of the nine matches in three sets. Vassar beat Wellesley 8-1 to advance to the championship, where the Lyons defeated the Brewers 9-0 to win their fifth consecutive Seven Sisters Championship.
Smith will now prepare for the Howe Cup, taking place on February 18-20, in Princeton, N.J.
