POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y.--Sophomore
Allie Stein (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) set two new Smith College records, for goals and points in a game as the Pioneers strolled to a 12-1 win over Bay Path College in the consolation game of the Betty Richey tournament at Vassar College on Sunday afternoon.
Stein broke the previous record of four goals in a game, which has been done three times. Most recently, it was set by Paola Prins, who completed the feat twice, in 1983 and 1984. Cathy Clifford also scored four in a game, in 1981. Her 13 points blew away the old mark of eight, done four different times in 1981, 1983, 1984, and 1993. Stein was not the only one to beat or tie a record - the 12 goals set a new school mark for goals in a game as a team, and tied for margin of victory, and
Alexa DeJesus (Somerset, Mass./Somerset) had three assists, which tied a record set by Lara DeSanti in 1992 and Megan McCusker in 1993.
The goals came fast and furious, as Smith opened up a 3-0 lead in the first 10 minutes and coasted to a 10-0 halftime lead. Stein got her first when
Sara Mercier (Portland, Maine/McAuley)'s pass sped through the area to her stick, where she fired home just 1:58 into the game. She made it 2-0 off of Sophie Demunynck's corner, and
Sydney Burns (Woodbury, N.J./George School (Pa.)) scored Smith's third, breaking down the right to fire home an unassisted tally.
Mercier got in on the action, scoring her first collegiate goal at the 14:27 mark, and Burns made it 5-0 two minutes later. Stein made it a trifecta of goals with an assist from
Alexa DeJesus (Somerset, Mass./Somerset) at the 25:02 point, and DeJesus continued to turn provider by assisting
Ahalya Raman (Bangalore, India/The International School) to make it 7-0 with 26:22 played.
Stein nabbed her fouth with another assist from Mercier, and Raman and DeJesus wrapped up the first half scoring, right on the stroke of halftime.
Bay Path broke up the shutout with a goal from Deanna Flagg, but the second half was all about Stein. The sophomore put her name in the record books with an unassisted tally, putting home her own rebound for an 11-1 lead, and made it a half dozen with 1:04 left in the game.
Appearing in just her second career game,
Abbey Fleming (Beverly, Mass./Beverly) made five saves to earn the win. Samantha Berrios made six saves for Bay Path. Stein and
Emma Camilleri (Florence, Mass./Wilbraham & Monson) were both named to the All-Tournament Team.
Smith will be on the road next, facing off against Elms College on Tuesday, September 13.
