Smith Tennis Drops Opener To MIT

NORTHAMPTON, Mass.--The Smith College tennis team fell in their opening match of the season by a 9-0 score to visiting Massachusetts Institute of Technology on Saturday afternoon.

The Pioneers (0-1) were swept at doubles by MIT (1-0).  At No. 1 Lauren Quisenberry and Anastasia Vishnevetsky beat the duo of Jaimi Inskeep (Warrenville, Ill./Wheaton Warrenville So.) and Jordan Dubin (Southampton, N.Y./Southampton) 8-1, while Michelle Dutt and Julia Hsu beat Clair Oblamski (Brookfield, Wis./Brookfield East) and Bayla Weick (Woodbridge, Conn./Amity) by the same score at No. 2.  Vynnie Kong and Juanita Becerra  made it a sweep with an 8-4 win at No. 3 over Rachel Canfora (Chicago, Ill./Fenwick) and Eunice Zhao (Las Vegas, Nev./Liberty)

MIT also swept the singles play, with Quisenberry beating Dubin 6-0, 6-1 at No. 1, and Dutt winning over Oblamski 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2.  Vishnevetsky posted a a matching 6-3, 6-3 win over Weick at No. 3., an dHsu beat Inskeep 6-1, 6-0 at No. 4.  Kong knocked off Canfora 6-2, 6-0 at No. 5, and at No. 6., Zhao was the only player to win a set for Smith on the day, by still fell to Becerra 1-6, 6-3, 1-10.

Smith will play at Wheaton College on Saturday, September 17 at 1 p.m., while MIT will entertain Clark University, also on September 17 at 1 p.m.
