Live Stats

Last Meeting:  September 22, 2010.  Smith 4, Westfield State 3 (OT).  The Pioneers rallied from a 3-1 deficit to stun the Owls in an overtime thriller.  Phoebe Hopkins (Philadelphia, Pa./Friends Select) opened the scoring three minutes into the game, but the Owls struck back, scoring twice before halftime and once more after the break to open up a 3-1 advantage.  Alexa DeJesus (Somerset, Mass./Somerset) brought Smith within 3-2 with a goal at the 48:45 mark, and Allie Stein (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) poked home Hopkins' penalty corner with 17 minutes to go to force the extra period.  Overtime had barely begun when Stein popped up with the winner, scoring off a Dari Goulden (Rutledge, Pa./Strath Haven) pass 59 seconds into the extra frame.

Westfield State Overview: The Owls have won two in a row, the most recent being a 1-0 victory over Eastern Connecticut State University on Saturday.  Sarah Pliszka got the only goal of the game four minutes before halftime as the Owls improved to 4-1 overall and 1-1 in the Little East Conference.

Smith Overview:  Smith fell in their most recent game to NEWMAC rival Mount Holyoke 9-0 on Saturday.  Missing several key players due to injuries, Smith lost their second consecutive game to fall to 1-4.

Westfield State Player to Watch: Jessi Gould.  A senior, Gould has seven goals in five games, and is second in the Little East in goals scored this season.

Smith Player to Watch:  Savannah Lawson (Oak Bluffs, Mass./Martha's Vineyard).  A sophomore, Lawson made a valiant effort against Mount Holyoke. She made 24 saves, three shy of the school record.

Did you know?  The Owls are members of the Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference, but since the MASCAC does not sponsor field hockey, they are associate members of the Little East in that sport.
