Lawson Sparkles In Loss To Westfield State

September 20, 2011

Box Score WESTFIELD, Mass.--Savannah Lawson (Oak Bluffs, Mass./Martha's Vineyard) hit the 20 save plateau for the second consecutive game, but it wasn't enough to keep the Smith College field hockey team from falling to Westfield State University, 3-1 on Tuesday evening.

After tying a career high with 24 saves against Mount Holyoke on Saturday, Lawson was strong in cage again for Smith (1-5), turning away 23 Owl shots to keep the Pioneers in the game.  WIth several players missing for Smith due to injury,

The Owls held a 1-0 halftime lead after senior Jessi Gould scored in the 13th minute with an assist from freshman Ashley Spindel.

Hall scored two goals in a span of three and a half minutes early the second half to stake the Owls to a 3-0 lead. She netted on a reverse stick shot from the left side with an assist from sophomore Sarah Pliszka 1:25 into the second half, and with just over 30 minutes remaining in the game, Hall split two defenders on the left side and blasted a wide-open shot from 15 yards for an unassisted goal.

Smith struck quickly as Alexa DeJesus (Somerset, Mass./Somerset) scored on a breakaway, only 62 seconds after Hall's second goal, but the Pioneers could not come up with another.  It was the third goal of the season for DeJesus.

The Pioneers will resume NEWMAC action when they hit the road for the fifth consecutive game, playing at Babson College at 12:30 on Saturday, September 24.  Westfield State will be at Elms College on September 22 at 7 pm.
