NORTHAMPTON, Mass.--Neither rain nor snow could stop the Smith College and Mount Holyoke College tennis teams from squaring off on Tuesday night, but it was the Lyons who came away with a 5-4 New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) win.
After powerful rain forced the match into Smith's Indoor Track and Tennis facility, the Lyons (2-5, 1-3 NEWMAC) had a little more in the tank to snap a five match losing skid. Smith drops their fourth in a row and fallis to 0-4 and 0-4 in the NEWMAC.
The Lyons took two of the three doubles matches - Nahree Han and AnnElizabeth Konkel defeated
Jaimi Inskeep (Warrenville, Ill./Wheaton Warrenville So.) and
Clair Oblamski (Brookfield, Wis./Brookfield East) 8-3, and Maya Sayarath and Sarah Anischik won at No. 2 over
Jordan Dubin (Southampton, N.Y./Southampton) and
Rachel Canfora (Chicago, Ill./Fenwick) 8-6. Smith grabbed their first point when
Eunice Zhao (Las Vegas, Nev./Liberty) and
Bayla Weick (Woodbridge, Conn./Amity) defeated Kelsey Brower and Kirsten Scheider 8-5 at No. 3.
Smith stormed back into the match courtesy of three singles wins - Oblamski earned a point with a 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 2 over Sayarath, and Weick added another with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Anischik at No. 3. Inskeep toppled Eman Malik 6-4, 7-5 at No. 4.
Han pulled one point back for Mount Holyoke with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Dubin at No. 1 singles, and the match hung in the balance with Nos. 5 and 6 to be played. Sarah Moore leveled the match with a 6-4, 6-3 win over
Allie Ryan (Springfield, Mass./Springfield Central ) at No. 6, and Konkel sealed the win with a exhaustive 7-6 (8-6), 1-6, 6-3 win over Zhao at No. 5.
Smith will next be in action this weekend when they head to Lewiston, Maine, to compete in the ITA tournament at Bates College. Mount Holyoke will also be in action at the same tournament.
