Game Preview: Basketball vs. WPI

January 18, 2012

NORTHAMPTON, Mass.--The Smith College basketball team (10-4, 5-3 NEWMAC) begins the first of three straight games on the road with a trip to Worcester Polytechnic Institute (4-11, 2-6 NEWMAC) on Wednesday night.

Last Meeting:  Smith posted a stunning 57-50 win over No. 2 seeded WPI in the semi-finals of the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) on February 26, 2011.  Amanda Zakoske (Jacksonville, Fla./The Bolles School) scored 17 points as Smith held the Engineers to 32.2 percent shooting (19-of-59) for the game.

Smith Overview: Smith was on both ends of blowouts last week - after hanging 92 points on Clark, Smith fell against No. 21 Babson College, falling 83-57.  The Pioneers sit tied for third place in league play with a 5-3 record.  With six of their final 10 games on the road this season, wins over teams like WPI will be critical in the battle for league position.

WPI Overview: ECAC semifinalists a year ago, WPI has struggled this season.  The Engineers have lost 10 of 12 games, including losses to nationally ranked Babson College and defending national champion Amherst College.  Only a 63-59 overtime win over Mount Holyoke has kept WPI in the win column since Christmas.

Smith Player to Watch: Paulina Solis (Santa Ana, Calif./Foothill) was Smith's best player against the Beavers, netting 11 points.

WPI Player to Watch:  Theresa Logan is averaging 11.0 points, 6.3 rebounds, and is shooting 78 percent from the free throw line.

Did you know? WPI and Babson were the only teams to sweep the regular season matchups with Smith last season.
