NORTHAMPTON, Mass.--Playing at home for the first time in two weeks, the Smith College basketball team (13-4, 8-3 NEWMAC) hosts Wheaton College (8-10, 6-5 NEWMAC) in a 2 p.m. tilt on Saturday. Smith will be looking to win their fourth straight game, while Wheaton will be going for their sixth win in eight games.
Last Meeting: Smith improved to 6-0 with a 56-40 win over the Lyons in Norton on December 3.
Rosa Drummond (Rye, N.H./Portsmouth) led all scorers with 16 points, while
Lizzy BelBruno (Hanover, N.H./Hanover),
Maddie Page (Arvada, Colo./Jefferson Acad.), and
Paulina Solis (Santa Ana, Calif./Foothill) chipped in 10 points apiece. Stout Smith defense held Wheaton to 28 percent shooting (15-for-52), while no Wheaton player had more than seven points.
Smith Overview: The Pioneers completed a three game road trip with a 70-45 win over Mount Holyoke on Wednesday night. Smith won all three games away from Ainsworth Gym by an average margin of 22.3 points. Drummond topped the scoresheet with 19 points, and added nine boards and two steals.
Wheaton Overview: After a rough start to the season that saw the Lyons win just two of their first 10 games, Wheaton has turned it around in January. The Lyons have won two straight and five of seven, with the only blemishes on that mark a four point loss to MIT and a loss to Tufts, who narrowly missed out on cracking the recent d3hoops.com Top 25.
Smith Player to Watch: The bench - Smith got 40 percent of their points against Mount Holyoke from non-starters.
Wheaton Player to Watch: Freshman Abbie Brickley averages a team high 11.8 points, and has scored in double-figures in eight straight games.
