NORTHAMPTON, Mass.--The Smith College basketball team (8-2, 3-1 NEWMAC) will resume play when they host Massachusetts Institute of Technology (7-3, 3-1 NEWMAC) in a battle of second place teams on Wednesday night. Smith will be looking to defeat MIT for the eleventh straight time.
Last Meeting: Smith locked up the No. 3 seed in the NEWMAC tournament with a 52-39 win over MIT on February 19, 2011. The twin towers of
Rosa Drummond (Rye, N.H./Portsmouth) (18 points, eight rebounds) and
Ellie Giles (Charlottesville, Va./St. Annes Belfield) (16 points, nine rebounds) led the way for Smith, who earned a season sweep of the Engineers.
Smith Overview: The Pioneers will get back on the court for the first time since a 64-59 win over MCLA on December 14. Drummond scored 20 points and drained a pair of three point shots in the final minute as Smith rallied for the win. It's all conference play from here for Smith, who play three of their next four, including tonight, at home.
MIT Overview: The Engineers came back from a 12 point halftime deficit to post a 69-65 win over Simmons College on December 30. MIT outscored the Sharks 36-13 over the final 10 minutes after Simmons led by as many as 19 points early in the second half. The win extended MIT's streak to four straight, including three consecutive NEWMAC wins over WPI, Coast Guard, and Mount Holyoke in December.
Smith Player to Watch:
Ellie Giles (Charlottesville, Va./St. Annes Belfield) provides stout defense, averaging 7.0 rebounds per game and 2.1 blocked shots.
MIT Player to Watch: Freshman Mari Kordell leads the team ins coring at 10.9 points per game, and tossed in 23 points against Simmons.
