Smith Field Hockey Trumped By Babson

October 13, 2012

Box Score NORTHAMPTON, Mass.--Morgan Lockwood had a hand in all seven goals, scoring five and setting up two more goals as Babson College defeated host Smith College in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference field hockey game on Saturday afternoon.  Babson improves to 10-3 overall, and remains undefeated in NEWMAC play with a 5-0 record.  Smith is now 6-7, and 1-4 against NEWMAC opposition.

The Beavers got the game's opening goal 3:41 into the contest, as Caroline Malone scored the first of her two goals, hooking home a pass from Lockwood.

Lockwood doubled the advantage less than four minutes later, firing home as pass from Julia Pochini.

Smith responded at the other end, as Jenny Estes (Falmouth, Mass./Falmouth)' cross flashed across the box, but rolled out of play.  Allie Stein (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) put a shot wide, and Alexa DeJesus (Somerset, Mass./Somerset) forced Babson goalie Kayla Florence into a save at the 23:34 mark.  Smith earned a trio of penalty corners at the end of the half, but could not beat Florence.  Demick denied Lockwood just before halftime, as the Beavers went into the break up 2-0.

In the second half, the Pioneers picked up where they left off, as Stein's goalbound effort was cleared off the line by Kelly Walsh, and both Emma Camilleri (Florence, Mass./Wilbraham & Monson) and Stein tested Florence.  The Pioneers earned five penalty corners in the first 10 minutes of the half, but could not find a way past the Babson 'keeper, who finished with seven saves.

With 20 minutes remaing, Lockwood made it 3-0 with an unassisted marker, and Pochini made it 4-0 less than a minute later with her fourth of the season, set up by Lockwood.   Lockwood completed her hat-trick in the 60th minute, and added two more goals for the final margin.

Babson outshot Smith 16-13, but Smith held a 12-5 edge in penalty corners.  Nora Demick (Watertown, Mass/Beaver Country Day) finished with seven saves for Smith.

The Pioneers return to action on Tuesday, October 16, hosting WPI in a 4 p.m. contest.  Babson will play at home on Sunday, October 14, in a non-conference match against Wesleyan.
