NORTHAMPTON, Mass.--Clark University snapped a 76 game conference losing streak with a 5-4 win over Smith College in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) women's tennis action on Tuesday afternoon. It was the first league win for the Cougars since October 16, 2001.
Smith is now 0-6, and 0-6 in the NEWMAC, while Clark is 6-8, and 1-5 against NEWMAC opposition.
In doubles play, Smith got their first point of the season when
Jordan Dubin (Southampton, N.Y./Southampton) and
Kyle Gouchoe-Hanas (Durham, N.C./Carolina Friends) notched an 8-1 win over Maggie Swann and Sarah Sachs at the No. 2 spot. Clark moved into an early lead when the duo of Gaby Suriano and Phoebe Hughes defeated
Bayla Weick (Woodbridge, Conn./Amity) and
Haruka Shimoto (Tokyo, Japan/International School of the Sacred Heart) 8-2 at No. 1 doubles, and Martha Ziemer and Kera Snyder topped Lindsay Roth and
Andrea Tanco (Veracruz, Mexico/Li Po Chun (Hong Kong)) 8-4 at No. 3.
Smith earned three wins at singles, including Dubin 's 6-3, 6-0 win over Sachs at No. 2, and Gouchoe-Hanas earned a 6-1, 4-6, 10-4 win over Hughes at No. 4. Ashley Burke grabbed another win at No. 5, with a 6-1, 6-4 decision over Kera Snyder.
Clark got singles wins from Suriano, who notched a 6-0, 6-1 win over Weick at No. 1, and Martha Ziemer, who defeated Camilla Skalski 6-0, 6-0 at No. 6. Swann earned the decisive win for Clark when she beat
Seema Samawi (Damascus, Syria/King's Academy) 6-2, 6-1 at No. 3.
Smith will return to the courts for the final time when they travel to MIT for a 1 p.m. match on October 20. Clark will also conclude the fall season when they travel to Wheaton College on October 20 for a noon start.
