Second Half Burst Leads No. 15 Amherst Past Smith

October 18, 2012

Box Score AMHERST, Mass.--The No. 15 Amherst College Jeffs scored three times in less than two minutes to break open a tie game en route to a 5-1 win over Smith College in non-conference field hockey action on Thursday evening.

Amherst improves to 8-4 with the win, while Smith dips to 7-8 with the loss.

The Jeffs opened the scoring on the stroke of 16 minutes, thanks to Annika Nguyen's unassisted tally.  Smith responded immediately, as Allie Stein (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) set up Jenny Estes (Falmouth, Mass./Falmouth) for her fifth goal of the season at the 16:22 mark.  The assist was Stein's 17th of the season, tying the Smith single season record held by Megan McCusker '93.

Despite the Jeffs' advantages in shots (26-2) and corners (16-0) in the opening stanza, the game remained 1-1 at halftime, thanks in large part to Smith goalie Nora Demick (Watertown, Mass/Beaver Country Day)

Demick made 10 saves in the first half, denying Amherst's Madeline Tank and Katie McMahon to keep the game level at halftime.

The Jeffs went in front for good at the 42:03 mark on an own goal, and Tank fired in her own rebound to make it 3-1 22 seconds later.  Kerry Fusco's goal in the 44th minute gave Amherst a 4-1 lead, and Alex Phile rounded out the scoring in the 51st.

Demick finished with 20 saves in total for Smith - while records are incomplete, it is within touching distance of the school record for saves in a game, which currently sits at 27 by Michele Gougeon in 1987.

Rachel Tannenbaum played the first 50 minutes in goal for Amherst, making one save, and Sarah Wise played the final twenty, and was not called upon to stop a shot.

Smith will take the field next on Saturday, October 20 at 1 p.m. in a NEWMAC matchup against Clark University.  Amherst will travel to Wesleyan College on October 20 for a NESCAC game scheduled to start at 1 p.m.
