Tennis Tripped Up By MIT In Fall Finale

October 20, 2012

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – In the final conference match of the season, the MIT women's tennis team kept its record perfect with a 9-0 victory over Smith College at the DuPont Tennis courts this afternoon. With the win MIT claimed both the regular season conference championship and the No. 1 seed in next week's NEWMAC Women's Tennis Tournament.

MIT (8-1, 7-0 NEWMAC) took a quick 2-0 lead in the match with quick victories at both No. 1 and No. 2 doubles, surrendering just one game combined in the two matches. A battle developed in the No. 3 match, however, as the MIT team of senior Caitlin Pomeroy and freshman Choah Kim battled the Smith team of sophomores Seema Samawi (Damascus, Syria/King's Academy) and Andrea Tanco (Veracruz, Mexico/Li Po Chun (Hong Kong)). After a tight battle the Engineer team finally prevailed by an 8-6 margin to complete the sweep of the doubles matches.

MIT wrapped up the team decision with identical 6-0, 6-0 wins in the first two singles matches decided. Freshman Victoria Tam (Rolling Hills Estates, Calif.) picked up the first singles point, defeating Samawi in the No. 3 match before sophomore Vynnie Kong scored the fifth and deciding point with her victory over sophomore Jordan Dubin (Southampton, N.Y./Southampton).

Two other matches were also decided by 6-0, 6-0 scores, with junior Lauren Quisenberry blanking her opponent in the No. 1 match and freshman Alana Peters doing the same in the No. 5 contest. Freshman Iris Zhuang delivered a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 4 for the Engineers.

Smith (0-7, 0-7 NEWMAC) put up a strong battle in the final match to be decided at No. 6. Pomeroy and freshman Victoria von Saucken wound up going to a tie break in the first set, with Pomeroy persevering, 7-6 (5). Pomeroy then went on to take the final set, 6-3, to complete the MIT sweep.

With the win MIT clinched the No. 1 seed at next week's NEWMAC Women's Tennis Championship that will be hosted by Wheaton College. The Engineers will play the winner of the matchup between the No. 4 and No. 5 seeds on Saturday, October 27 at 12:00 p.m.
