Game Preview: Field Hockey vs. MIT

October 27, 2012

NORTHAMPTON, Mass.--Control what you can control.  It's a saying that resonates for a lot of people, and for the Smith College field hockey team (7-10, 2-5 NEWMAC), it means defeating MIT (14-2, 6-1 NEWMAC) in the final game of the regular season.  Smith will also need Babson College to beat Mount Holyoke College to give the Pioneers the final NEWMAC tournament berth.

Last Meeting: MIT scored four times in the games' first 20 minutes for a 4-0 win on October 1, 2011.  Savannah Lawson (Oak Bluffs, Mass./Martha's Vineyard) made 17 saves for Smith.

Last Smith Win: October 18, 2008 - Sarah Knowles scored the game winner in double-overtime as the Pioneers knocked off the Engineers 2-1 in Cambridge.  Phoebe Hopkins opened the scoring 11:31 into the second half, before Anna Teruya leveled for MIT at the 55:46 mark.

Smith Overview: Smith suffered a tough 2-1 loss to Keene State College on Senior Day on Thursday.  Allie Stein (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) got Smith on the board in the second half, but Smith could not find the tying goal.

MIT Overview: The Engineers are locked into the No. 2 seed and a bye into the NEWMAC semifinals, regardless of today's outcome.  MIT beat the University of New England 6-0 in a non-conference game on October 25.

Smith Player to Watch: Allie Stein (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer)'s goal against Keene State was her 23rd of the season, which sits as the fourth highest total in a season in school history.  It also moved her season total to 64 points, the second highest total in school history.  Five points this weekend would break the former record, set by Hall of Famers Paola Prins in 1984.

MIT Player to Watch: Molly McShane has scored eight goals and set up 14 more.

Playoff Permutations:  Smith is tied with Mount Holyoke at 2-5 for the final place in the NEWMAC tournament.  Should the teams finish with the same record, Mount Holyoke would earn the spot thanks to their 9-1 win on September 15.  As mentioned, the Lyons travel to Babson for a noon start on Saturday. Mount Holyoke (7-8, 2-5 NEWMAC) beat Babson (13-4, 7-0 NEWMAC) twice in 2011, including a 7-2 win in the NEWMAC tournament semi-finals.
