Smith Opens Season With Rout of Roger Williams

November 17, 2012

Box Score BRISTOL, R.I.--Paulina Solis (Santa Ana, Calif./Foothill) was one of five Smith players in double figures, tying a career high with 17 points as the Pioneers' basketball team opened the 2012-13 season with a 90-62 win over Roger Williams University.

It was the first meeting between the teams since the 1996-97 season.  Smith is now 1-0, and has won its opening game for the fifth straight year.  The Hawks fall to 1-1.

The Pioneers jumped out to an early 6-2 lead thanks to four free throws from Amanda Zakoske (Jacksonville, Fla./The Bolles School) and Solis' layup that forced the Hawks into a 30 second timeout.  Roger Williams pulled to within 10-8 on a basket from Alexandria Lanieri, but Smith reeled off the next seven points, including Zakoske's steal and fast break layup, followed by a three pointer from Rosa Drummond (Rye, N.H./Portsmouth).

Another Lanieri hoop got Roger Williams within six at 21-15 with 9:56 left in the first half, but Smith responded with an 11-2 burst, capped by a layup from Marissa Munoz-Ruiz (Fairfield, Calif./Justin-Siena) for a 32-17 advantage.  Sydney Parkmond (Waterbury, Conn./Chase Collegiate)'s layup with 34 seconds left gave Smith a 51-30 halftime advantage.

The Hawks came out of the halftime break on fire, knocking down their first six shots of the frame to pull within 53-43 on the second of two free throws by Angelica Ariola, but Parkmond fed Solis for a basket, and Solis drained one of her three three pointers to move the Smith lead to 62-47 with 13:21 left in the game.

Smith continued to pour it on, going up by as many as 30 points on Alyssa Barrett (Berlin, Conn./Berlin)'s jumper with 3:07 to play.

Drummond, Zakoske, and Devon Quattrocchi (Brewster, N.Y./Brewster) each finished with 15 points for Smith, who outrebounded Roger Williiams 49-34.  Quattrocchi led Smith with eight rebounds and passed out five assists.  Bethany Claps (Staten Island, N.Y./Staten Island Acad.), making her collegiate debut, chipped in 10 points and six rebounds off the bench.

Roger Williams will host Suffolk University at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, November 20, while Smith will play host to Middlebury College on November 20, also at 6 p.m.
