Box Score TROY, N.Y.--A second half rally lifted Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute past Smith College, 66-63 on Sunday afternoon in a non-conference women's basketball game. Smith suffers its first loss of the season, dropping to 2-1, while RPI is now 3-1.
Bethany Claps (Staten Island, N.Y./Staten Island Acad.) led Smith with 16 points off the bench, while
Devon Quattrocchi (Brewster, N.Y./Brewster) and
Sydney Parkmond (Waterbury, Conn./Chase Collegiate) each tossed in 11 points.
Rosa Drummond (Rye, N.H./Portsmouth) led all players with 10 rebounds. Sarah Wetmore topped RPI with 13 points.
Smith led for much of the first half, taking a 7-6 lead at the 17:26 mark when
Rosa Drummond (Rye, N.H./Portsmouth) drained a three pointer, and
Devon Quattrocchi (Brewster, N.Y./Brewster)'s layup extended the Smith advantage to 16-10. RPI clawed to within two points at 20-18 on Sarah Wetmore's offensive rebound and putback, but Quattrocchi picked Courtney Reynold's pocket and fed
Paulina Solis (Santa Ana, Calif./Foothill) for a three that pushed Smith back up 27-19.
Amanda Zakoske (Jacksonville, Fla./The Bolles School)'s jumper at the 4:44 mark gave Smith their biggest lead of the first half at 33-18, but RPI went on a tear to end the first half, outscoring Smith 15-6 from that point to cut the lead to 39-33 at halftime.
The Engineers picked up where they left off in the second half, scoring the first six points of the stanza before Smith responded with back-to-back baskets from Drummond and
Sydney Parkmond (Waterbury, Conn./Chase Collegiate) for a 43-39 lead. Michelle Reid tied the game for RPI on a layup with 14:15 left in the game, and the Engineers scored the next seven points, courtesy of a three pointers and two free throws from Courtney Reynolds to take a 52-45 lead.
Bethany Claps (Staten Island, N.Y./Staten Island Acad.) had a hand in the next four Smith baskets, scoring three and setting up
Marissa Munoz-Ruiz (Fairfield, Calif./Justin-Siena) for a layup as Smith took back the lead at 57-56, and after Ashley Clough gave RPI the lead back on a three point shot, layups from Parkmond and Quattrocchi restored Smith's advantage at 61-59.
Jen Rock's free throws gave RPI the lead for good, as Smith missed their final five shots down the stretch and committed five turnovers. Wetmore's layup made the score 65-61, but Smith got within two on two free throws from Zakoske. After Wetmore went 1-for-2 at the foul line, Solis' three with four seconds remaining was off target.
Smith will return to the Pioneer Valley to open NEWMAC play with a visit to Mount Holyoke on November 28 at 7 p.m. RPI will travel to Utica College on Nov. 27, for a 6 p.m. tip-off.
