December 01, 2012

NORTHAMPTON, Mass.--The Smith College basketball team (3-1, 1-0 NEWMAC) will make their conference home debut when the Pioneers play host to Wheaton College (Mass.) (3-2, 1-0 NEWMAC) at 2 p.m. on Saturday afternoon.  Wheaton leads the all-time series 27-15, but Smith has won the last three meetings with the Lyons.

Note: Today's game is the Tyler Tip-Off, named for Kim Tyler.  Tyler was a first year basketball player at Smith who passed away in 1991.  The number 23 is retired in her honor.

Last Meeting: Devon Quattrocchi (Brewster, N.Y./Brewster) scored 12 points as Smith pulled away from Wheaton for a 61-50 win.  Smith held a commanding advantage at the free throw line, shooting 17-25, while Wheaton was just 7-10.

Smith Overview: The Pioneers opened conference play with a 71-50 win over Mount Holyoke on Wednesday night.  Smith held a slim 30-28 lead at the half, but held Mount Holyoke to 24 percent shooting the second half to open up a double-digit lead.

Wheaton Overview: The Lyons also started league play with a win, after a 52-45 victory over Coast Guard on Wednesday.  Wheaton overcame 25 turnovers with good ball movement, with assists on 12 of their 19 field goals.
