Box Score NORTHAMPTON, Mass.--
Rosa Drummond (Rye, N.H./Portsmouth) posted a double-double and
Amanda Zakoske (Jacksonville, Fla./The Bolles School) had a fine all-around game as the Smith College basketball team toppled the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts 77-46 on Wednesday evening. Smith is now 8-1, while MCLA is 5-4.
Drummond finished with 16 points and 10 rebounds for her first double-double of the year, while Zakoske stuffed the stat sheet with 15 points, seven rebounds, seven steals, and two assists.
Sydney Parkmond (Waterbury, Conn./Chase Collegiate) was close to her own double-double with eight points and nine rebounds, and
Lauren Weston (Florence, Mass./Northampton) contributed eight points on perfect 4-for-4 shooting in 11 minutes off the bench.
Defense led the way again for Smith, who forced 33 turnovers and harassed MCLA's top scorer, Lucy Tremblay, into a 6-for-21 evening. Tremblay finished with 18 points, while Daniello Scolpino had 11 and Kait Chenevert 10.
Smith opened the game on a 10-2 run; Zakoske got the scoring going with a pair of free throws, and
Paulina Solis (Santa Ana, Calif./Foothill) fed
Devon Quattrocchi (Brewster, N.Y./Brewster) for layup that made it 6-0 and forced MCLA into a 30 second timeout.
The Blazers responded with a 9-1 burst that tied the score at 11. Tremblay knocked down a three point basket, and two free throws each by Scolpino and Tremblay knotted the score at the 10:48 mark.
The Pioneers pulled away over the next six minutes, outscoring MCLA 16-0 as Drummond canned a pair of three point shots and a traditional three point play by Zakoske. Two free throws by Chenevert stopped the bleeding, but the Pioneers led 31-15 at halftime, having limited MCLA to 4-for-21 shooting from the field and taking nearly three times as many free throws as MCLA (17-to-6) in the half.
Smith turned on the gas in the second half, never letting MCLA get closer than 17 points and leading by as many as 31 points.
Smith will break for the holidays and will take the court again on January 2, traveling to Westfield State. MCLA will travel to Williamsport, Pa., to take part in the Lycoming Hoops for Hounds Tournament on December 29.
