Box Score SPRINGFIELD, Mass.--The Smith College basketball team knocked down a season high eight three point shots, and forced 28 turnovers in a 73-56 win New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) win over Springfield College on Tuesday night. Smith is now 5-1 overall, and 3-0 in league play, while Springfield is 1-5, with an 0-3 NEWMAC record. The Pride have lost five straight.
The Pioneers were led by
Paulina Solis (Santa Ana, Calif./Foothill)' career high 19 points. Solis was 3-for-6 from three point range, and added nine steals and seven rebounds to boot. The nine steals set a new single game record, breaking the previous mark of eight jointly held by Tammy Drummond '84 and Shelly Street '94.
Devon Quattrocchi (Brewster, N.Y./Brewster) also chipped in with a career high 18 points, connecting on 7-of-15 fields, including 3-of-5 from long distance.
Rosa Drummond (Rye, N.H./Portsmouth) hit double-figures as well, tossing in 10 points.
Solis set the tone early, nailing a three on Smith's first possesion of the game, and sandwiching two layups around a basket from Springfield's Heather Lewis for an early 9-2 lead. Quattrocchi's three at the 11:07 mark of the first half upped Smith's lead to 18-4, and it wasn't until Lewis' layup with 6:58 left in the first half that Springfield got into double-figures.
Drummond got in on the three point shooting, as her three pointer with 1:21 left in the first half gave Smith a 41-17 lead, which Lewis cut to 42-21 at the half on a layup with 24 seconds left in the stanza.
Smith opened the second half on a 12-4 run - Solis kickstarted the burst by blocking Tamara Tribble's layup, then getting back to hit a three off a Quattrocchi feed. The sophomore hit another three at the 17:44 mark, followed by a basket from
Amanda Zakoske (Jacksonville, Fla./The Bolles School) that put Smith up 29. Quattrocchi's theft of Briana Freymuth led to another Solis layup that gave Smith their biggest lead of the game at 65-27.
The Pride ended the game on an 8-0 run to get the deficit below 20 points on a three from Brittany Gage with 16 seconds left in the game. Lewis led Springfield with 16 points in 21 minutes off the bench.
Smith will be back in action on Thursday, hosting the United States Coast Guard Academy on December 6 at 7 p.m. Springfield will host WPI on Friday, December 7, at 7 p.m.
