Game Preview: Basketball vs. Wellesley

February 18, 2012

NORTHAMPTON, Mass.--There is one final regular season goal to be accomplished for the Smith College basketball team (18-5, 13-4 NEWMAC).  The Pioneers can tie the school record for wins in a season with a win over Wellesley College (12-10, 11-6 NEWMAC) on Saturday afternoon.  Smith will honor their lone senior, Ellie Giles (Charlottesville, Va./St. Annes Belfield), before the game, and will also be hosting a "Play 4 Kay" event.  Fans are asked to wear pink to the contest.

Last Meeting:  Wellesley's Leslie Leong scored four points in the final 13 seconds as Wellesley beat Smith 62-61 on January 7.  It was the first time Smith had lost to Wellesley since 2006.  Devon Quattrocchi (Brewster, N.Y./Brewster) and Maddie Page (Arvada, Colo./Jefferson Acad.) each had 13 points for Smith.

Last Smith Win: Smith limited Wellesley to 1-15 shooting from three point range to earn a 44-35 win on January 22, 2011.  Rosa Drummond led Smith with 10 points, while Marissa Munoz-Ruiz turned in a six point, seven rebound, seven steal performance.  Smith forced 30 turnovers while improving to 9-6 overall and 6-3 in league play.

Smith Overview: The Pioneers battled back for a 65-59 overtime win against WPI on Wednesday night.  Smith tied the game twice in the final minute, and Ellie Giles (Charlottesville, Va./St. Annes Belfield) swatted away the Engineers' attempt at the buzzer.  After WPI scored the first three points of overtime, Smith shut the door, taking the lead for good on Rosa Drummond (Rye, N.H./Portsmouth)'s triple.  Paulia Solis and Maddie Page (Arvada, Colo./Jefferson Acad.) each scored 17 points for Smith.

Wellesley Overview: Winners of three of five, the Blue will have a home playoff game for the first time since 2001.  Against Coast Guard in their last game, Wellesley knocked down 25 of 33 free throws and won despite shooting 27.1 percent (13-for-48) from the floor.

Smith Player to Watch:  Playing in potentially her final home game at Ainsworth Gym, Giles will be keen to end her career on a high.  The senior has been stout on defense, averaging 7.2 rebounds per game and 2.0 blocks per contest.

Wellesley Player to Watch: Leong is one of three players to start every game this year, and averages 11.6 points and 8.7 rebounds.  The sophomore scored 21 points, including 12-of-12 from the free throw line in a win over Coast Guard on Wednesday night.

Playoff Permutations:  Smith has locked up the No. 2 seed and a bye in the NEWMAC tournament.  Wellesley and Clark are both tied entering the final game of the season with 11-6 league records.  Both teams have clinched home playoff games.  Springfield College sits in fifth place with a NEWMAC record of 8-9, while Wheaton and WPI are tied for sixth place with 7-10 marks.  WPI holds the tiebreaker over Wheaton.  MIT sits one game back at 6-11.
